How to Choose a Candle Scent: A Guide to Every Ralph's Orchard Fragrance
Choosing a candle scent without being able to smell it first is one of those genuinely tricky things. You can read the notes on the label, but knowing whether bergamot will feel fresh or sharp in your living room, or whether sandalwood will read as cosy or heavy, takes a bit of guidance.
This guide is designed to help. We have grouped all of our fragrances by mood and occasion, so you can start with how you want a room to feel rather than working backwards from a list of ingredients. Each scent links through to the full range of products available in that fragrance.
Not sure where to begin? Our Fragrance Quiz takes about two minutes and gives you a personalised recommendation based on your preferences.
Warm and Cosy
These are the scents for evenings in, slow mornings, and anything involving a good cup of something. Rich, deep, and reassuring.
Cardamom Coffee Fresh-ground coffee and spicy cardamom, with the warmth of a Middle Eastern souk running through it. Rich, comforting, and grounding without being heavy. Best for: Kitchens, home offices, slow weekend mornings.
Fireside Molasses and black treacle, chestnut, clove, balsam, and a finish of guaiacwood and tonka. Deep, smoky, and genuinely comforting. One of our most evocative scents. Best for: Living rooms on cold evenings. A candle for blankets and quiet conversation.
Honey & Molten Amber Bergamot and lemon open brightly before settling into clove, maple honey, and smokiness, with a rich base of birch tar, dry amber, patchouli, and vetiver. Warming without being sweet. Best for: Anyone who loves resinous, layered scents that deepen as they burn.
Velvet Tonka Lavender and armoise open fresh and herbaceous, warming into soft orris and cinnamon, then settling into tonka bean, vanilla, and golden amber. Sophisticated and comforting at once. Best for: Bedrooms, evening wind-downs, those who want warmth without anything too dark or smoky.
Chestnut & Ember Roasted chestnuts with a warm base of oak, vanilla, and patchouli. Hints of dry leaves and distant woodsmoke give it a grounded, nostalgic quality. Best for: Autumn and winter evenings. A quieter, softer alternative to Fireside.
Wild Honey Tobacco Wildflower honey and vanilla open gently before cured tobacco leaf takes over, settling into molasses and dried herbs. A slow-burning, mellow warmth. Best for: Those who want something bold and unusual, with real character.
Woody and Grounding
Scents built around wood, resin, and earth. Calm and considered, with enough depth to fill a room without dominating it.
Vintage Bookshop Cashmere, leather, sandalwood, and tobacco, softened with amber, vanilla, and warm ginger. A musky, faintly masculine fragrance that feels like a well-loved library. Best for: Studies, reading rooms, booksellers, and anyone with an appreciation for the past.
Soft Sandalwood Creamy sandalwood lifted by bergamot and cinnamon, with saffron and lily at the heart and a base of cedarwood, amber, patchouli, and a lingering touch of coconut. Rich but never heavy. Best for: Living rooms, bedrooms, and gifting to those who love earthy, sophisticated scents.
Frankincense & Myrrh Warm amber and rock rose, deep myrrh, and a grounding base of cedar, vetiver, and patchouli. Ancient, meditative, and deeply calming. Best for: Quiet evenings, meditation, and anyone who enjoys a truly resinous scent.
Wild Fig & Oakmoss Ripe fig, bergamot, and citrus top notes lead into rosemary, orange blossom, and rose, finishing on amber, musk, sandalwood, and cedarwood. Fruity and woody in equal measure. Best for: Those who want something natural and distinctive without leaning entirely into either category.
Fresh and Green
Clean, natural, and uplifting. These scents work well in kitchens, hallways, and anywhere you want the air to feel lighter.
Enchanted Forest Pine needles, cedar, and oakmoss. Simple, honest, and immediately transporting. The smell of a proper woodland walk. Best for: Kitchens, hallways, and anyone who finds floral or sweet scents too much.
Tomato Vine Tomato leaf, apple, rhubarb, galbanum, and eucalyptus give a sharp, fresh, green character, softened by plum, jasmine, sandalwood, and moss. Unusual and genuinely refreshing. Best for: Garden rooms, kitchens, and anyone who finds most candles too sweet.
Sage (Essential Oil) 100% pure clary sage essential oil. Clean, herbaceous, and earthy, with a gentle camphorous note and a soft green freshness. Best for: Those who prefer a single-note, essential oil fragrance with no synthetic complexity.
Clean and Coastal
Light, airy, and ozonic. These are the scents that make a room feel open.
Amber & Rock Salt Heady amber and rock salt, with slightly woody driftwood underneath. A very clean, cold, oceanic scent, inspired by a fresh sea breeze and open water. Best for: Bathrooms, hallways, and those who want a marine scent without the overly synthetic note that often comes with it.
Drift Soft almond and clove balanced with delicate jasmine and heliotrope. Tranquil and understated, with a coastal warmth that stops it feeling cold. Best for: Bedrooms, bathrooms, and anyone who wants a coastal scent with a softer, floral edge.
Calm and Composed
Quietly sophisticated. These scents are grounding in a different way to the woody group, tending towards the floral, botanical, and refined.
Smoky Earl A refined blend of smoky bergamot, black tea, and soft rose, grounded in cedarwood and violet. Familiar without being predictable. One of our most elegant fragrances. Best for: Living rooms, home offices, and gifting to someone with considered taste.
Zen: Cassis, Rose, Green Tea Cassis, violet leaf, and green fig open at the top, settling into rose, geranium, and matcha green tea, with soft amber, musk, and cedarwood at the base. Beautifully balanced. Best for: Bedrooms, reading rooms, and those who want a fragrance with floral notes that doesn't lean fully into a traditional rose scent.
Lavender (Essential Oil) 100% pure lavender essential oil. Genuinely calming, honest, and uncomplicated. Best for: Bedrooms, winding down, and anyone who wants a no-fuss, universally loved scent.
Seasonal Scents
These fragrances are linked to a particular time of year and are available while stocks last.
Winter Clementine Ripe clementine and zesty lemon with rich cassis and a heart of delicate orange blossom. Festive but fresh, and less heavy than most Christmas scents. Best for: The weeks around Christmas, or anyone who wants citrus warmth without the spice.
Spiced Orange Orange, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The classic Christmas scent, done well. Sentimental, warm, and instantly festive. Best for: Seasonal gifting and those who want that familiar, nostalgic note of mulled wine and Christmas markets.
Winter Solstice Citrus, grapefruit, and pine wood open cold and bright, before red berries and lychee warm the heart, finishing with vanilla and powdery musk. Light and uplifting for a winter scent. Best for: Those who find most Christmas candles too dark or spice-heavy.
