Tips For Creating Outdoor Evening Ambience

Tips For Creating Outdoor Evening Ambience

We have all become used to socialising outdoors more during the past few years, and right now is the perfect time to spend long summer evenings chatting in the garden or a park with friends. To set the mood perfectly, outdoor candles in attractive ceramic or glass bowls can really put the finishing touch on the evening.

Outdoor candles can be used to enhance the experience with a pleasant summery scent and provide a soft glow of light as the sun sets. They can even deter those insects which seem determined to drown themselves in your pinot grigio. There’s nothing more annoying than trying to have a good gossip while constantly batting away biting little critters.

Look for candles which contain citronella scent, which help to repel pesky bugs and mosquitos. Citronella is an essential oil extracted from grasses of the Cymbopogon family, and is related to lemongrass. It contains a mixture of geraniol citronellol, and citronellol, and it works by masking the human scents which attract insects.

Some other scents and essential oils, including eucalyptus, catnip, clove, patchouli, peppermint, and geranium oil also have insect repellent qualities. Some of these oils are better at repelling specific insects than others. While overall, citronella is a good all-rounder, peppermint and eucalyptus oil are best for crawling creepies, such as ants and spiders.

Scented oils, which can be burned in a diffuser or in candles, are a much more eco-friendly way to avoid insects than using toxic chemicals, or fly strips which kill the insect. Even if we don’t want them crawling all over us, most insects are important for the biodiversity of the environment, as a food source, a predator, or a pollinator. Be kind with a candle!
